Don't Get Overwhelmed, Get Organized: How To Start and Plan a Tile Project

Updated: Aug 9, 2023

You've spent months looking at your home every day with this nagging feeling that something needs to change. You're waiting for inspiration to strike and identify exactly what it is you should do. No need to hold your breath. Here is a simple step-by-step guide to find inspiration and get the ball rolling on your home improvement project.

Determine the space you want to upgrade

Maybe it is the backsplash in the kitchen that needs a facelift, or the powder-room sink, or the tile around the outdoor barbecue that hasn't been replaced since it was built, or the warping laminate flooring in your daughter's bedroom you've been meaning to swap out for an easier to clean tile alternative.

Pick your area but make sure it is an area you can work around not necessarily having access to during the majority of the project. This will decrease your stress and the risk of becoming overwhelmed during the process. If you want to redo your outdated kitchen backsplash you would want to plan as to how you would function without that area of the house. You could set up a make-shift kitchen station in a corner of the dining or living room. Using a countertop microwave along with a mini-fridge and a plug-in single burner would make a great kitchen substitute for a week or two. It is enough to be able to make your kids breakfast or lunch so you are not eating out every single meal. This not only saves you the headache and overwhelming feeling of not having any resemblance of a kitchen but it also saves you money on the cost of take out for every meal. A little foresight and planning can make your dream project seem much more reasonable and attainable.

Get Inspired

If you are looking for a starting point to jump off of for determining the design the internet is one of the best resources for you. Pinterest and Instagram can help immensely in that they both can provide examples of a wide variety of styles quickly. Pinterest is the classic platform for inspiration photos, called "Pins" on the Pinterest website. Instagram is a more recent player in the design world but has emerged as a strong platform due to the ability to reach so many people and ease of access through the "Explore" page on the Instagram app.

If you have an Apple device, you can download Pinterest from the App Store here and Instagram from the App Store here. If you have an Android device, you can download Pinterest from the Google Play Store here and Instagram from the Google Play Store here.

Once you have determined the space you want to renovate, a plan for how you will manage without and around that space, and found some examples of designs, layouts, shapes, colors, or materials that you like, you are ready to develop a plan of action.

Now that you have an idea of what you do like, you may have an image in your mind of what you'd like the finished product to look like or you may need some more help to define exact design elements to complete your vision.
